A: Terpenes are the primary constituents of essential oils in cannabis. In fact, all plants produce terpenes and it is the terpenes which are responsible for the aroma and characteristics of the plant. In the case of cannabis, terpenes interact synergistically with cannabinoids to produce what is referred to as the entourage effect. In other words, the terpenes help to enhance certain qualities on cannabinoids and steer their effects. Terpenes also possess functional and therapeutic benefits all on their own. Terpenes that lend a more uplifting, cerebral, stimulating, alert, energized, or focused effect are categorized as ‘sativa’ terpenes while terpenes that lend a more calming, soothing, relaxing, sedative, pain relieving effect are categorized as ‘indica’ terpenes.
